CHAPTER THIRTEEN

JUNE 26

THE NEXT MORNING, Justin somehow missed Darby and Naz at breakfast, but he located her in the mail room pulling some papers from an oversized manila mailer.

“Hey, guess what?” he said, taking a letter from the clerk. “I got a message about Monday….”

“Ooh, my dad sent me some of his drawings.” She glanced up as he stuffed his envelope in his pocket. “Don’t you want to check and see if your parents sent you anything?”

“My parents?” Justin asked, as if she’d called them extraterrestrials. Mr. Usher’s summons temporarily forgotten, he concentrated on his shoes. Should I tell her about my dad? It helped to tell Naz, even when I didn’t want to. He took a deep breath and met her eyes. “The letter is from my mom. My father died in April.”

“What? How?” She drew her brows together, then hid her head in her hands. “I mean I’m sorry. That’s awful.”

After Darby heard Justin’s story, she blinked away tears and looked down at her dad’s drawings. He didn’t have to read her mind to recognize the gratitude that spread across her face.

Before they parted, Justin told her about Mr. Usher. A bit later, when Naz and his cabin mates were about to enter Branch Hall, Justin pulled him aside to catch him up, too.

“Superbe,” said Naz, then he whispered, “The orange line got longer last night.”

“It did? Why?”

“I don’t know.”

On his way back to Eight North, Justin stopped short. I know! Mr. Usher told us to help ourselves by doing something we’d rather not. Like I did yesterday with Naz and Eugene. And just now with Darby. I can’t wait to tell him.
